After a historic season with the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes becomes the youngest MVP since Dan Marino. Mahomes in his second NFL season, led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game, while throwing for 50 touchdowns and 5,097 yards. The Chiefs led the league in total offense and finished with a 12-4 record. Mahomes received 41 of the votes over Drew Brees who received nine votes.

Mahomes was electric this season, and after sitting behind Alex Smith last season, the Chiefs thought he was ready to take the lead. Mahomes was drafted in 2017 with the 10th overall pick by the Chiefs. Mahomes was expected to replace Smith after a couple of seasons.

Smith had led the Chiefs to the playoffs four out of the five years he was in Kansas City. His total record was 53-27 and was consistent at leading the Chiefs to wins. He also made the Pro Bowl in three of those years, including his last season with the Chiefs. The Chiefs traded Smith after the 2017 season to the Washington Redskins and the Mahomes era began.

Mahomes had a successful college career for Texas Tech and in his last season he led the nation in passing yards and total touchdowns. Mahomes chose to forgo his senior year at Tech and declare for the NFL draft. He was the second quarterback taken in the draft, and backed up Smith his rookie year.

After Smith left Mahomes was given the starting job and had a historic first year. Mahomes shocked the nation with his decision-making, football IQ, and his

throwing strenght. His no look passes and arm strength confused defenses to the point where it looked like someone was always open. Mahomes seemed to find a guy every time he passed and his ability to scramble out of the pocket, only helped him to find the open man. Mahomes started the season with 14 straight touchdown passes without an interception and his first four games without an interception. This type of play was exciting to watch and football fans everywhere tuned in week after week to see what Mahomes would do next.

Mahomes was one game away from playing in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs 37-31 overtime loss to the New England Patriots showed his ability to adapt to a situation and lead his team back from adversity. The Chiefs were down 14-0 going into half time, and the team looked overwhelmed. Mahomes shocked the Patriots as he lead the team into overtime, but the defense could not stop the Patriots from scoring first. The question of if Mahomes could have finished the huge comeback was left unanswered, and the Chiefs were sent home early.

The Chiefs have a bright future with their talented receivers and Andy Reid’s play calling. With Mahomes in the NFL the league is in a great place. Hall of famers like Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger are getting older, but the young talent is promising enough to encourage fans for years. Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, Jared Goff and Carson Wentz are just a few of the young quarterbacks that are ready to take over the league.

The Chiefs need to improve on defense for the team to make the next jump. The offseason will most likely be spent doing that. If Mahomes does not have to worry about always scoring 30 points a game, the team will undoubtedly be more successful. Mahomes has just begun his career, and if the team as a whole improves this offseason they will be a Super Bowl favorite in 2019.
